Description

A warm, cheesy, and comforting side dish perfect for cozy dinners, family gatherings, or holiday meals. This gratin combines tender sweet potatoes, rich garlic cream, and a golden layer of melted cheese, creating a dish that is both indulgent and wholesome. Inspired by classic French gratins, it’s easy to prepare and guaranteed to impress.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or cheddar)

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  • Stir in heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat gently until warm, then remove from heat.

  • Arrange a layer of sweet potato slices in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping. Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with a handful of Gruyère cheese.

  • Repeat layering with remaining sweet potatoes, cream, and cheese, finishing with a generous layer of Gruyère and Parmesan on top.

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

  • Let the gratin rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin sweet potato slices for uniform cooking.

  • Gruyère provides a nutty flavor; cheddar or a mix of cheeses works well too.

  • Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking.

  • For extra crispiness, broil the top for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking.

  • Experiment with herbs like rosemary or sage to enhance flavor.
