Description

Green bean casserole is a classic comfort dish that’s perfect for family dinners, holiday gatherings, or any cozy evening at home. Creamy, flavorful, and topped with a golden, crispy layer of French fried onions, this casserole brings warmth and nostalgia to the table. Inspired by traditional American recipes, it combines fresh green beans with a savory mushroom sauce, creating a side dish that’s both easy to prepare and universally loved.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces

  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

  • 1 â…“ cups French fried onions, divided

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized casserole dish.

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 3–4 minutes until crisp-tender. Drain and immediately plunge them into ice water to stop cooking and preserve their color.

  • In a medium skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Sauté chopped onions for 4–5 minutes until soft and translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  • In a mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and half of the sautéed onions. Mix until smooth. Optionally, stir in shredded cheddar cheese.

  • Gently fold the blanched green beans into the sauce mixture until evenly coated. Transfer into the prepared baking dish.

  • Sprinkle 2/3 of the French fried onions evenly on top of the casserole. Save the remaining onions for later.

  • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the onions are lightly browned.

  • Remove from oven, sprinkle remaining French fried onions on top, and bake for an additional 5 minutes to achieve a golden, crispy topping.

  • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Fresh green beans provide the best texture and flavor, but frozen beans work in a pinch.

  • Blanching the green beans ensures they remain crisp-tender and vibrant green.

  • For a cheesier variation, stir in cheddar, Gruyère, or Parmesan cheese into the sauce.

  • The casserole can be assembled a day ahead and baked when ready to serve.

  • To keep the topping extra crispy, add the remaining French fried onions at the end of baking rather than the beginning.
