Description

A glossy, sweet, and savory chicken dish inspired by classic Chinese barbecue flavors, made easily at home with simple ingredients.


Ingredients

  • 900 g (2 lb) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) hoisin sauce

  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) soy sauce

  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) honey

  • 50 g (1/4 cup) brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce

  • 2 tablespoons apple juice

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


Instructions

  • Whisk all marinade ingredients together in a bowl until smooth.

  • Coat the chicken evenly with the marinade and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) and place chicken on a wire rack over a lined baking tray.

  • Bake for 20 minutes, brush with extra marinade, flip, and bake for another 15–20 minutes.

  • Grill/broil for 2–3 minutes to caramelize the glaze.

  • Rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra stickiness, brush with glaze during the final minutes of cooking.

  • Adjust sweetness by reducing honey slightly if desired.

  • Serve with rice, vegetables, or wraps for a complete meal.
